Match Report

Florence and the Machine

The goal-scoring and match-winning 'machine' that is Goring Robins U12s returned to form in the OYMYFL Knock Out Shield Final, after the previous week's disappointment.

This was Robins U12s' third cup final in recent seasons, and after narrowly losing the previous two they were determined to set the record straight. This was clear from the way they started the match with commitment and skill, relentlessly attacking Florence Park. Reward came after only a few minutes when James finished a good passing move with a cool left foot shot at the far post.

Florence Park were largely limited to occasional break away attacks in the first half, often with long balls over the top. But Rory produced another peerless display, rushing off his line several times to intercept or clear the ball as Florence Park strikers bore down on goal.

Gradually Robins' possession and skillful play allowed them to dominate the first half with a series of attacks. George H was a constant threat down the left wing, and Felix and Ollie S formed a potent strike force. Four more Robins goals came before half time which effectively ended the match as a contest.

Having seen his team selection and tactics work so well, the Robins manager was able shuffle his pack in the second half so that everyone got to experience some cup final match time. As usual, Robert looked strong and calm in defence, and with his compatriots, Thomas and Will, kept Florence Park at bay for most of the second half. However, to their credit the home team didn't let their heads drop and persevered until they scored a well deserved consolation goal.

Another two goals for the Robins in the second half competed the scoring, with Felix and Ollie S both finishing with hatricks.

Overall the Robins were deserving winners, scoring an impressive 27 goals in their four cup matches, and team captain for the day, George S, proudly lifted the trophy.
